Brainerd House is an Intensive Residential Treatment Service for adults looking for mental health and co-occurring disorder treatment. We are a 90-day program focused on recipients’ individual goals. We are located in Duluth, near the University of Minnesota Duluth campus.

What Makes an IRTS different?

We accept recipients in different stages of recovery and from diverse backgrounds. Our program is unique in that we will consider and accept recipients’ who are on suboxone. Our goal is to work with each recipient to be sure they discharge from Brainerd House to the least restrictive setting with the most independence.

We are able to coordinate with supports in the community, family, friends and professionals.

Our staff are experienced with the resources in Duluth and value the importance of each recipients’ natural supports.

We offer a sober and supportive environment tailored toward personal growth.

What Does our Program Look Like?

We work with individuals to develop person-centered treatment plans. Programming has two facets, 1:1 daily encounters to work on individual goals, and daily groups. Our groups consist of various topics to provide a well-rounded experience. Some of the topics include:

  • Illness Management and Recovery
  • Co-Occurring Substance Use Disorder Treatment
  • Anger Management
  • Independent Living Skills
  • Various Health Topics

Things to Know

  • Our facility is not handicap accessible
  • We are open to all genders
  • We can accommodate 10 adults in individual rooms
  • If we are at capacity, prospective recipients are placed on a waitlist
  • We do not allow self-administered medications, all medications are dispensed by staff
